Outcome

Over 18 years, Catalyte has kept USA Swimming at the forefront of emerging technologies. This includes the development of a mobile application to better connect USA Swimming with its network of athletes, coaches, followers, employees and fans. The new platform also allowed USA Swimming to manage the ongoing world-wide collection of 125 million times and results for dissemination to members, media outlets, international governing bodies and third-party commercial sports platforms.

Headquartered at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Co., USA Swimming (USAS) is the national governing body for competitive swimming in the United States. It’s charged with selecting the United States Olympic Swimming team and any other teams which officially represent the United States, as well as the overall organization and operation of the sport within the country. To keep pace with its growing pool of athletes, coaches and fans, USAS has partnered with Catalyte to develop a new, immersive membership and times management platform, as well as an industry-leading mobile application.

Membership growth and data complexity render existing platform obsolete

USA Swimming was challenged with using a 20+ year old custom-built platform for both membership and times/results management. The platform was unable to scale to meet organizational needs in terms of membership growth, data size and complexity and the ability to connect with technologically advanced users. Catalyte was chosen to design, build and implement a modern platform that addressed both near term concerns and eventually extended the functionality and user experience to FINA (the international governing body for the Olympics), NBC, NCAA and other international federations.

Catalyte supplied the management, architecture, development and testing resources to accomplish USAS’s technical transformation and deliver its modern platform in just eight months.

Technical and managerial expertise delivers advanced technology suite

Catalyte has designed, built, implemented and supported more than 20 key applications at USAS.

In 2007 we helped USAS launch Deckpass, its first mobile platform. The application allowed USAS to better engage its 350,000+ members across the U.S. It provided near real-time results from the major meets in the U.S. and internationally. Catalyte recently helped re-launch Deckpass as a hybrid app with new features and better supportability as both iOS and Andriod operating systems evolve.

Relationship helps platform continue to swim laps around competition

Our 18-year partnership with USAS has advanced its technology suite and made it a leading Olympic organization in the creative use of technology to solve complex business challenges. Catalyte has become the key technology thought leader for USAS. We work in conjunction with its internal team to find newer and better ways to both solve complex technology problems. USAS can now leverage its data and technology to automate NBC’s play-by-play announcing tasks for nationally televised meets and automate the selection of athletes who qualify for the NCAA National Swimming Championships. The platform and its components have caught the attention of international federations around the world who have requested assistance in building something similar to manage their national swimming organizations.

Key Takeaways

  • Increased engagement: USA Swimming could better connect with its different core constituencies
  • Mobile first: App could be used pool side for practice or on the couch watching televised meets
  • International standard: Platform considered by swimming governing bodies around the world
